COMMUNITY PROJECTS
The Junior League of Fort Worth makes a difference in the community by providing trained volunteers to non-profit agencies. Some of the agencies also receive funding for important projects. The following community agencies have been selected to receive Junior League funding and volunteers for 2010-2011.
AMON CARTER MUSEUM FAMILY FUNDAY
2010 - 2011
$28,000
Junior League support will go to Family Fundays at the Amon Carter Museum. JL volunteers will staff the event for three Sundays during the year, helping to bring together families throughout North Texas in fun, educational activities. Each event has a different exploratory theme that correlates with artwork on display. Fundays are open to all families and are entirely free. The purpose of the Family Fundays is to allow the League to be a part of answering the community’s demand for free and engaging family activities that provide a meaningful cultural experience.
KIDS IN THE KITCHEN
2009 - 2012
$15,000
This project for the Junior League of Fort Worth is the result of a national education initiative on childhood obesity and nutrition. It was launched by the Association of Junior Leagues in response to the alarming statistic that nearly one-third of children in the U.S. are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. The Junior League of Fort Worth has committed $15,000 over three years. Volunteers will collaborate with local organizations to promote and expand the AJLI initiative.
PARTNERS TOGETHER FOR HEALTH
2010 - 2011
$15,000
Junior League support will go to the “All I Want for Christmas” project in a partnership with JPS Health Network. The goal is to provide almost 6,000 children with a special toy for the 2010 Christmas season. Volunteers will work with JPS Health Network and the “All I Want For Christmas” program manager to provide a special toy to sick children for the 2010 Christmas season. The volunteers will help count and sort toys. Because special care is given to distributing the right toy or basic needs item to the right child, all toys must be sorted according to age group prior to counting and distributing. The volunteers will help coordinate toy drives during the fall of 2010, possibly shop for toys and attend a party at the JPS Main location to distribute toys.
PRESBYTERIAN NIGHT SHELTER
2009 - 2012
$9,000
The Presbyterian Night Shelter serves the needs of Tarrant County’s homeless. The Shelter believes in respecting the dignity of its clients, serving an average of 3,040 annually. Junior League of Fort Worth volunteers make a difference in the lives of children through the Awesome Outings program by encouraging and mentoring homeless children. Volunteers organize monthly outings that provide the children with unique opportunities to experience life outside of the shelter walls. The program helps build self-esteem and encourages the children to become good citizens by rewarding good grades and good behavior. The League will provide $9,000 over three years to support the Awesome Outings program.
SAFEHAVEN OF TARRANT COUNTY
2010 - 2012
$24,000
Junior League support will go to a summer camp project called CampHeart. The camp is held twice a year (fall and spring) over a three-day weekend for 6-12 year old victims of family violence. Volunteers provide support to Safe Haven’s CampHeart program in their critical mission to end the cycle of domestic violence and allow children to regain trust in adults.
THE JOAN KATZ BREAST CENTER
2010 - 2011
$19,552
The Junior League is excited to partner with The Joan Katz Center to provide an extension of women’s services by providing a startup grant to purchase surgical camisoles, mastectomy bras, breast prostheses and hair prostheses to women with breast cancer who do not have resources to purchase these items. The League volunteer will be working at the Oncology Appearance Center where these items will be sold. The Joan Katz Breast Center will be a new facility to Baylor All Saints campus.
THE SALVATION ARMY
2010 - 2011
$13,500
Junior League support will go to “The First Choice Program” which is a long-term residential facility for chemically dependent women with children. Our project would divide support between two efforts at the facility: Birthday celebrations for mothers with children, and room make-overs for the 13 rooms at the center.
