COMMUNITY PLACEMENTS

The Junior League of Fort Worth makes a difference in the community by providing trained volunteers to non-profit agencies. The following community agencies have been selected to receive Junior League volunteers for 2010-2011.
                                                                      AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION

American Diabetes Association Camp Aurora is a day camp that offers an exciting week of outdoor activities while learning valuable lessons on positive diabetes management. Volunteers serve as camp counselors and work hand-in-hand with health care professionals, to ensure the children have as much fun as possible while learning self-confidence, independence and peer support.

CANCER CARE SERVICES

Cancer Care Services, a United Way organization, is dedicated to providing financial, emotional and social assistance to under-served cancer patients and their families. Volunteers work with Cancer Care Services to plan and host special events for patients and their families.  Events include dinner parties, National Cancer Survivor’s Day and more.

COOK CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER

The Cook Children’s Medical Center’s purpose is improving the health of children.  Their services range from simple preventive checkups to highly-specialized critical care. Volunteers assist the hospital in improving the experience of the children undergoing medical treatments and their families by reading books, playing in the playroom, holding and rocking babies, and educating parents.

THE FIRST TEE, INC.

The First Tee is an initiative of the World Golf Foundation.  The focus is to give young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship.  Professional golfers provide top-quality instruction with the help of volunteers. 

FORT WORTH OPERA

The Fort Worth Opera Festival’s purpose is to educate, entertain, and expand the horizons of audiences and artists as they preserve and expand the art of opera with artistic integrity. Volunteers help support the Fort Worth Opera by working as concierges and in the gift shop during the Fort Worth Opera Festival.

FORT WORTH TEEN COURT

Volunteers assist the county in adjudicating teen offenses such as truancy, theft and minor assaults.  They may serve as the Teen Court Judge or mentor teen attorneys who put the teen defendants on trial. The Teen Court Placement is a great opportunity to both assist the community in preventing crime and provide a service to teens who are ambitiously seeking a career in law.

KINDERFROGS SCHOOL AT TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY 

KinderFrogs is an early childhood education facility on the TCU campus serving young children with disabilities. This collaborative effort between parents, teachers and administrators has one major goal in mind—to make the lives of these children rich with possibility.  Volunteers serve as classroom assistants and provide an extra set of hands to do anything and everything to help their mission.

MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. The Southwest Region, headquartered in Fort Worth, has granted more than 400 wishes in the last 5 years, with most granted in Tarrant County.  Volunteers organize and plan wishes for children referred to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  This includes meeting with the child and his or her family and discerning their wishes, as well as helping coordinate all aspects of the wish-granting. 

 MOTHER’S MILK BANK OF NORTH TEXAS

The Mother’s Milk Bank of North Texas is a not-for-profit community organization which collects, pasteurizes and stores human donor milk.  The donor milk is dispersed to critically ill and pre-term hospitalized infants.  MMBNT operates much like a blood or tissue bank. It is vitally important that premature and critically ill newborns receive human milk as it greatly enhances their survivability and decreases complication rates. Volunteers serve as Pasteurizers and Transporters.

PERFORMING ARTS FORT WORTH

The Performing Arts Fort Worth Children’s Education Program is an exemplary outreach program at Bass Hall for the school age children of Fort Worth, offering top-level creative introductions to the performing arts.  Volunteers serve as liaisons between the program at Bass Hall and the area schools.  They also spend time reading in the FWISD classrooms.

SLANT 45:  BIG THOUGHT

“Service Learning Adventures in North Texas” is one of three major education initiatives the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee will launch as part of its legacy programs. Designed to inspire creativity and build problem-solving skills, this unique service-learning project will positively impact thousands of North Texas school children and their families. SLANT 45 will be one of the largest community-wide service-learning projects for children in U.S. history and the largest in NFL history. Starting in early 2010, an estimated 20,000 elementary age students (grades 3 – 5) will log a combined 45,000 hours in more than 100 communities that will forever change the face of the region. North-Texas-based Big Thought, one of the nation’s leading nonprofit organizations focused on improving public education through creative learning, will design the concept, curriculum and implementation plan. The JLFW will be collaborating with other Leagues in North Texas for this initiative and working with children within our own communities.

TARRANT AREA FOOD BANK

The Tarrant Area Food Bank works to eliminate hunger in Fort Worth and 13 surrounding counties by providing food, education and other resources to a network of partner agencies and their communities. Volunteers provide vital assistance by working hands-on in the Community Kitchen and through the “Operation Frontline” project to provide nutritional education instruction to pregnant and parenting girls.

UNION GOSPEL MISSION OF TARRANT COUNTY

The Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County serves over 190,000 meals and provides shelter to more than 900 individuals each year.  Volunteers are committed to helping the Mission give hope to the homeless through their Good Shepherd Clinic, which provides complimentary health care to men, women and children staying at the Mission.

WINGS OF HOPE EQUITHERAPY

It is the mission of Wings of Hope Equitherapy to provide quality equine-assisted activities to children and adults with disabilities.  Volunteers assist riders during their therapeutic rides, allowing Wings of Hope to serve a greater number of riders and allowing for more therapy classes for those registered in the program.

 

Through fundraisers and community collaborations the Junior League of Fort Worth provides vital funding to local community agencies in support of women and children, education, cultural enrichment, health and well being.

CHRISTMAS IN COWTOWN HOLIDAY GIFT MARKET

The Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market is a show of exhibitors including merchants from across the country, artists and crafts people representing all categories of products including home décor, wall art, antiques, seasonal pieces, jewelry, children’s products, clothing and much more.

DOUBLE EXPOSURE

Double Exposure is the Junior League of Fort Worth’s resale shop. Embarking on its 62nd year, the Double Exposure provides quality merchandise at affordable prices to the community.  The Double Exposure is located at 1714 8th Avenue.

COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS

MAYFEST, INC.

Mayfest, Inc. celebrates 39 years as a family festival in Trinity Park.  Junior League volunteers continue to serve an important role in Mayfest, promoting the beautification of the Trinity River.

FORT WORTH STOCK SHOW AND RODEO

Junior League of Fort Worth members have sold rodeo programs at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo since 1957. The League receives a portion of the revenue from each program sold providing additional funding for community support.
